PNG to JPG: What Happens to Transparency?

Transparency needs a replacement color

A converter may flatten transparent areas onto white, black, or another chosen color. Without an intentional background, edges around a logo or cutout can look wrong in the destination design.

Inspect soft edges

Partially transparent pixels create smooth outlines and shadows. These pixels are blended with the replacement background, so a file prepared for white may show a pale fringe on a dark page.

Keep PNG or WebP when alpha matters

If the image must work over different backgrounds, export PNG or WebP with transparency. Choose JPG only when an opaque background is acceptable and broad photographic compatibility is useful.
