The same ratio can have many sizes
1920×1080 and 1280×720 are both 16:9. One contains more pixels, but their shape is identical. That is why dimensions describe resolution while ratio describes the frame.
Locked resizing preserves the ratio
If the width and height change by the same proportion, the image keeps its natural shape. Changing only one value independently stretches or squeezes the content.
A different ratio requires a decision
To put a landscape image into a square, either crop away part of the scene, add empty space, or accept distortion. Cropping is usually the cleanest choice for photographs. Decide the target ratio before setting final dimensions.
