JPG for familiar photographic delivery
JPG is widely compatible and efficient for photos. It uses lossy compression, has no transparency, and becomes damaged by repeated low-quality saves.
PNG for lossless edges and alpha
PNG is valuable for screenshots, diagrams, logos, and graphics that need transparent pixels. Large photographic PNGs are often unnecessarily heavy because lossless storage preserves more data.
WebP for flexible web assets
WebP supports photographic compression and transparency, often with compact results. Use it for modern web delivery, but keep a source file in a format appropriate for editing. Always compare the actual appearance and bytes.
